Your week wrapped
Acumen Media has released its weekly overview of this week's top stories in South Africa.
The budget speech was one of the biggest talking points this week as finance minister Tito Mboweni took to the podium on Wednesday. Leading to the budget speech there were rumours of a one-off tax increase, however, that was not announced as the minister announced further bailouts for Eskom and the South African Airways.
Power utility Eskom came to the spotlight again this week as it cut off power supply to the Western Cape rail system on Thursday due to Prasa's non-payment - Eskom did, however, restore power in the evening after Prasa paid. The EFF marched to Eskom's head office against loadshedding and its privatisation later in the week. Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, the party's members were forcibly removed from the State of the Province Address.
Other news that made the headlines this week include the resumption of the Zondo Commission into state capture with the damning testimony from Lulama Mokhobo about Hlaudi Motsoeneng; University of KwaZulu-Natal protests amounting to over R30m; Omotoso trial stalling again; and the NSRI conducting a search after an inflatable boat capsized in Cape Town, leaving nine missing.
On the lighter side, Nando's launched a chicken nuggets phone call ad in response to the new KFC nuggets, and then the #WhopperAd taking swipe at Burger King. Across the Atlantic Ocean, Joe Biden claimed that he got arrested for trying to meet Nelson Mandela during apartheid and Hollywood star Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape.
