Are you a storytelling pro with a passion for news, social media, and community reporting?

We’re looking for someone who’s got the skills, drive, and creativity to bring the Highway Mail, our flagship newspaper, to life on our print and online platforms.

What you need:

• Degree/Diploma in Journalism or Communication
• 3+ years in a newsroom? Big bonus!
• Sharp writing skills—tell both sides of the story with accuracy
• Attention to detail (because facts matter!)
• Top-notch interviewing skills & solid English
• Photography skills = major plus!
• Valid driver’s license & own wheels (you’ll be on the move!)
• Self-motivated, deadline-driven & works well under pressure
• Team player with problem-solving skills
• Diary management and staying ahead of the news
• Social media savvy—must create content (videos, soundbites, and more!) for Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube & our website
• Available after hours a every second weekend
• Knowledge of the Highway area & local contacts? Huge advantage!

THE Highway Mail is the grand dame of the newspapers in the Caxton Pinetown stable.

At 70 years of age, this old girl has seen it all. She has soldiered on through the apartheid era, seen the dawn of democracy and witnessed mayors come and go.

The Highway Mail was there at the Pinetown Commission of Enquiry in the 80s, at the bombing of the Pinetown Post Office and during the 1987 floods which devastated the Highway area.

But most of all, the Highway Mail has been the finger on the pulse of the community. It has recorded the triumphs and the tragedies of the people who live here and has been there when ordinary people did extraordinary things. Despite the wrinkles, the only thing old about the Highway Mail is its age.

It is bang up-to-date with online content in this modern digital era. Her title site, www.highwaymail.co.za, has long been a firm favourite with mobile visitors for a number of years. It has young, enthusiastic journalists committed to their communities and who strive to bring to the reader the news that matters.

Between the pages of the Highway Mail, you can find news you can use. With the current economic climate, the Highway Mail is the paper to peruse for those month-end specials and to compare prices at various supermarkets. Our advertising content will tell the reader where to shop for bargains.
