The role of leadership in supporting mental health and wellbeing in the workplace
In today's fast-paced and often disrupted work environment, mental health and overall wellness can't be avoided. It demands attention from employers and employees alike. Essentially, taking care of your own and your team members' well being means trying to help them stay in a toward state and switched on where they can function at their best (i.e. avoiding triggering the fight/flight/freeze response that put people in an away state and switch them off). 27 Jul 2023 Read more

Global survey indicates positive outlook for public relations in 2023
Over the course of the pandemic, many communications agencies reduced staff complements, restructured or pivoted into new models of implementation. As the world became more and more digital, with marketing and communications' budgets cut, media owners also retrenched or shut down as advertising declined. The 'new normal' was a challenging communications landscape, but one that also brought opportunity with it. 1 Mar 2023 Read more

Changing perceptions about palliative care
Prior to 2020, within many cultures, death was a sanitised topic and one that did not get much mainstream airtime. The global Covid-19 pandemic changed that, with conversations about mortality increasingly taking place within homes and around the globe. These conversations mirrored the ones had by the medical profession as medical and healthcare staff experienced levels of death that were, for many, unprecedented. 4 May 2022 Read more

7 trends to ensure a thriving workplace in 2022
In 2021, we expected life to return to normal. We survived 2020, Covid-19 protocols were second nature, vaccines were being rolled out, and we were making plans to get our teams back into office. But the year brought far more unpredictability than expected, and with new Covid-19 variants came renewed challenges and regulations. Clearly, life was not returning to (our version of) normal any time soon. 2 Mar 2022 Read more

Leadership now: Lessons from 2021 and preparing for the future
As I reflect on 2021, the main word that comes to mind is "survival". Even as the world ramped up to continue its fight against Covid-19, corporate leaders in South Africa found other challenges waiting in the wings - an economic downturn, political unrest, violence and looting. Still, as I weigh up 2021, I see a year of great contemplation, awakening and resilience. Although change was forced, extreme and reactive, this disruption allowed something incredible to emerge - we learned to work in an entirely different way. 7 Dec 2021 Read more

Beyond measure
Peter Drucker's quotation, "What gets measured gets managed", has become axiomatic of good business and rightly so, but it is worth noting that the oft quoted phase is a truncated version. Unchartered waters: Our new normal and adjusting to it
All organisations (businesses, companies, non-profit organisations and more) have been dealt a tough blow this year. None of us expected what 2020 had in store for us, but we all adapted (or didn't) differently. At the same time, the new normal has meant different things for different people and for different organisations, therefore reinforcing different responses to it. The truth is that it has impacted many more aspects of our lives than we had anticipated - family lives, work lives and social lives. Let's look at just a few ways in which working and leading were impacted. 2 Nov 2020 Read more
