      Key purpose of the role

      The media strategist will be responsible for constantly reviewing, assessing, modifying, and making PMB’s product offering relevant to direct and, particularly, agency clients. This will include keeping abreast of all local and international developments and innovations related not only to radio but to all media types, to inform PMB’s current and future competitive strategies. The role requires understanding and applying market data driven by the research team to create value propositions that solve for the media strategies of our clients, in line with PMB’s commercial growth aspirations.

      This role is accountable for the development and go-to-market processes of new media products across radio and digital brands, ensuring their success and reporting on their impact. To support this ongoing product review and development responsibility, the incumbent will also workshop and guide AE agency sales approaches, pitch techniques, and strategies to increase success rates and ARPU.

      Key outputs/accountability

      Product development

      • Accountable for the development and go-to-market strategies of new media products across radio and digital brands, including input on positioning, packaging, and pitching.
      • Build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to increase sales opportunities for PMB’s products and services.
      • Guide, coach, and train the sales team on the products while providing supporting collateral.
      • Work closely with the media intelligence team on analysis and insights, collaborating with the chief intelligence officer to ensure data is effectively used to drive market share.

      Media sales strategy input

      • Work closely with the chief intelligence officer on sales strategy, particularly for agency teams, providing insight into buying and decision-making behaviour in the market.
      • Actively contribute to agency trading deal approaches and structures.
      • Assess various tactical solutions for different market segments.
      • Develop macro approaches to meeting client needs and identifying effective campaign opportunities.
      • Conduct post-campaign evaluations to improve business strategies.
      • Deliver efficient, succinct strategic insights to clients and develop creative solutions.
      • Understand the relationship between live and archived data.

      Internal reporting

      • Assist in gathering and summarising information for internal Exco (monthly), board (quarterly), and shareholder (bi-annual) reports.

      Educational qualifications

      • A formal marketing, media, or related qualification would be preferable.

      Required knowledge and experience

      • Preferably eight or more years of work experience in a top media agency in a strategy role.
      • Good understanding of the South African media landscape.
      • Strong relationships at a senior level in the media industry, well respected and liked.
      • Essential to have strong digital as well as traditional media experience.
      • Project management experience.

      • Media analysis in Telmar SurveyTime/Nielsen Clear Decisions.
      • Proficiency in media planning and post-campaign software for all major media channels.
      • Basic understanding of research approaches and tools.
      • Ability to design, package, and present information effectively.
      • Ability to generate clear, actionable briefs as part of project management.
