Key purpose of the role

To lead the online news team and ensure accuracy and high standards of online delivery. Develop strategies to attract and grow audiences.

Key outputs and accountabilities

• Lead the EWN online news team across Johannesburg and Cape Town.
• Manage the team’s performance and KPIs, including ensuring accuracy.
• Grow EWN’s reach across various audience segments in the digital space (unique browsers, app subscribers, newsletter subscribers).
• Apply a deep understanding of SEO practices and tools, including producing SEO reports.
• Contribute to the development of EWN’s online strategy.
• Oversee the daily and weekly digital assignment diaries for the team.
• Lead the online team to produce original content while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
• Maintain and update writing, social media, and product style guides.
• Manage video, text, and photo wire services.
• Supervise writing and online editing freelancers.
• Stay up to date with technological advances in news gathering and delivery across all platforms.

Educational qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or an equivalent qualification.

Required knowledge and experience

• At least five years’ experience in an editorial leadership position.
• Strong editorial experience with a demonstrable knowledge of current affairs.
• Strong understanding of the SA Press Code.
• Proven management experience and skills.
• Demonstrable experience in a digital news environment.
• Experience driving digital innovation across multiple media types.
• Experience in creating on-demand content.
• Strong knowledge of digital platforms and ecosystems.
• Experience in video production within the news digital space.
• Excellent understanding of socio-economic and political issues in South Africa, Africa, and globally.
