The line producer ensures the production remains on schedule and within budget while staying true to its creative vision. This role involves closely collaborating with the production manager to ensure smooth logistical operations. The line producer reports to the executive producer.
Main duties
Budget and script evaluation:
- Understand and evaluate the working budget against the production objectives.
- Review scripts in line with production goals and budget availability, making recommendations to the director and producer.
- Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure decisions align with the budget and cash flow requirements.
- Coordinate all arrangements for pre-production, production, and post-production to meet deadlines while maximising on-screen production value.
- Collaborate with the production accountant to ensure payments align with the budget, identify potential over- or under-spends, and maintain cash flow.
- Prepare weekly cost reports for internal production control and monthly cost reports for submission to the SABC.
- Ensure purchase orders are issued for all transactions and maintain a record of all payments.
- Estimate and manage petty cash for shooting locations, ensuring expenses are accounted for and recorded.
- Maintain accurate creditor commitments, notifying the executive producer of potential overspends and obtaining authorisation.
- Reconcile expenditure books and petty cash with the accountant, delivering accurate monthly cost reports to the SABC.
- Ensure all creditors are paid and production-related documents are handed over to the producer and accountant at the season’s end.
- Communicate with the HR manager and producers to hire appropriate heads of department.
- Liaise with HR to ensure contracts, insurance, and industry-standard conditions for cast and crew are in place.
- Maintain accurate records of cast and crew details.
- Ensure cast and crew perform their duties effectively and departments communicate seamlessly.
- Uphold mutual respect and adherence to HR policies and codes of conduct among staff.
- Coordinate logistics for music composition, recording, and post-production of picture and sound, aligning with the schedule, budget, and producer requirements.
- Confirm stock orders, booking forms, and purchase orders for post-production processes with the SABC.
- Ensure completed episodes are delivered to the SABC in the correct format.
- Oversee the safekeeping and return of external drives with episodes and hard drives containing rushes to the SABC.
- Ensure textless and texted HD masters of each episode are retained in an external raided hard drive at the production’s conclusion.
